A hive tool is the first thing you reach for and the last thing you want to lose track of. The 10.25-inch Orange Hive Tool is the classic straight style — a flat pry bar with a curved scraper end and an angled flat end — in 304 stainless steel with a deliberately thick 3.25mm cross-section. That extra thickness matters more than it sounds. Most hive tools flex a little when you're prying a stuck super. This one doesn't. It gives you a solid lever when boxes have been glued shut with propolis and you need actual mechanical advantage to break them apart.
The orange paint is practical. Orange stands out in green grass, on wooden hive boxes, and on the ground. When you put it down on top of a super and forget it, you'll see it. We've lost enough silver-colored tools over the years to appreciate this.
The handle area is sized to fit in a beekeeping jacket pocket, in the side tray of a smoker, or in a standard tools belt. If you're starting out and buying your first kit, buy two — one for your pocket, one as the one you lend out or leave in the truck.
We carry this straight classic tool and the J Hook Orange Hive Tool. The classic is better for scraping — the flat end works efficiently on frame top bars and box joints. The J Hook is better for lifting frames — the hook slides under a frame lug and lifts it out cleanly without disturbing adjacent frames. Most experienced beekeepers carry both. If you're buying your first hive tool, start with the classic. If you're adding a second, add the J Hook.
